Apple has officially announced a partnership with Google to use Gemini AI models to power the next generation of Siri — a move widely seen as a strategic decision to stay competitive while Apple continues developing its own artificial intelligence technology.

In a joint statement released this week, the two tech giants confirmed that Google’s Gemini models will support Apple’s upcoming foundation models, bringing Siri into the era of agentic AI. While the collaboration signals a major shift in Apple’s AI roadmap, branding changes are unlikely to be visible to consumers. Apple is expected to maintain full control over the user experience, with Gemini operating behind the scenes as a customized engine for Apple Intelligence.

Industry experts say the partnership was inevitable. “If this were a romantic comedy, everyone would say this outcome was obvious,” said Andy Tsay, professor of information systems and analytics at Santa Clara University. “The collaboration simply makes sense.”

Apple and Google have a long-standing business relationship. Court documents from a 2022 antitrust case revealed that Google pays Apple billions annually to remain the default search engine on iPhones and other Apple devices. Privacy remains a sensitive topic for Apple users. Google’s data-driven advertising business has raised questions about how user information might be handled under the new partnership.

However, experts believe most AI processing will remain on Apple’s infrastructure. “It’s unlikely user queries will be sent directly to Google servers,” said Haibing Lu, professor of information systems at Santa Clara University. Instead, Google is expected to build customized models that run on Apple’s devices and servers, keeping user data within Apple’s ecosystem.

Ultimately, how data is stored and processed will matter more than which company provides the AI model.

The partnership between two of the world’s most valuable companies could attract regulatory attention, especially as smaller AI firms face increasing competition. Analysts suggest that U.S. regulators may take a lighter approach compared to previous administrations, making significant intervention unlikely in the near term.

Some industry observers believe Apple’s reliance on Gemini is temporary. As Apple continues investing in its own AI research, it may eventually transition to a proprietary solution — similar to how Apple gradually replaced Google Maps and search integrations in earlier years.
