Google has officially entered the AI language learning space with the launch of three new experimental tools powered by its Gemini large language model. Available through the Google Labs platform, the tools—Tiny Lesson, Slang Hang, and Word Cam—aim to offer immersive and real-time assistance to users looking to learn a new language on the go.
Unlike traditional apps, these tools work directly from the browser with no need to download. They’re designed to bring a more interactive and practical experience, allowing users to engage with real-world scenarios while learning vocabulary, grammar, and local expressions.
Tiny Lesson allows users to describe their situation, such as being lost or needing help, and then provides the most relevant vocabulary and phrases. Slang Hang focuses on informal language and casual conversation by simulating dialogues between native speakers. Meanwhile, Word Cam uses a phone camera to detect objects in the user’s surroundings and instantly provide translations, helping learners connect words with real-life visuals.
These tools currently support 15 languages, including Hindi, English, Spanish, Chinese, French, Arabic, and more. Google clarified that these are experimental features, not full-scale products, and may evolve based on user feedback.
Maggie Shiels, a spokesperson from Google, said the tools were created to “inspire developers using Gemini for building different use cases and experiences,” emphasizing their bite-sized and contextual nature.
As Duolingo and other platforms continue to lean into AI, Google’s move signals its intention to reshape how people learn languages—focusing on immediacy, utility, and real-world relevance.
For now, users can explore the new tools at Google Labs and test this next-gen approach to language learning.
