Artificial intelligence leader OpenAI has announced that its flagship chatbot, ChatGPT, is approaching the milestone of 1 billion weekly active users. The platform currently records over 900 million weekly users, marking a sharp rise from 700 million in September last year and more than doubling from approximately 400 million users in early 2025.

The company also revealed that ChatGPT now has over 50 million consumer subscribers, alongside 9 million business users—a fourfold increase in enterprise adoption since September. This rapid expansion underscores the accelerating integration of generative AI into everyday digital interactions.

In comparison, rival AI firm Anthropic reported a 60% increase in users of its chatbot Claude since January, with its paid subscriber base doubling, although exact figures were not disclosed. Meanwhile, competitors like Google continue to scale their AI offerings, including Gemini.

On the investment front, OpenAI confirmed updated funding commitments, with Nvidia scaling back its investment to $30 billion from an initially proposed $100 billion. Additional contributions include $30 billion from SoftBank and $50 billion from Amazon.

Earlier this year, ChatGPT introduced a new $8 “Go” subscription tier that includes advertisements, signaling a shift in monetization strategy. The move has sparked industry reactions, including indirect criticism from competitors.

With a reported valuation of $730 billion, OpenAI continues to lead the global AI race. The rapid growth of ChatGPT highlights the unprecedented pace at which generative AI technologies are being adopted worldwide, while also intensifying discussions around ethical use, accuracy, and the broader societal impact of AI systems.
